A fully-illustrated story/journal written from the point of view of a 13yr old mute boy named Zig as he goes on a one month journey to find answers to the mysteries surrounding his life. From discovering new plants and animals, to meeting colorful new characters, to the everyday struggles living as an odd kid in an even odder world, Zig is in for one heck of a long month.
Zig’s journey is, if I’m being honest, a project I took on, on a whim. It was my idea of a creative take on something called the Inktober challenge, where every year artists from all around the world challenge themselves to create one ink illustration every day, day by day, for the entire month of October. And literally the night before October 1st this year, I was just doodling up ideas and out came this character, and right then and there a light bulb went off in my head. I’ve been writing stories about characters for years, but what if a character wrote their own story?
Rather than drawing a random illustration everyday for the challenge, each illustration would instead be a page in this character’s personal journal as he went on a one-month long journey.
What I wasn’t expecting going into this project was how attached and invested into the world and characters I would become. It was a journey in itself to write and draw everyday as I wondered what would happen next, what crazy things were they gonna see, and how was the ultimate story line of this odd voiceless boy trying to find his place in the world going end? And when that last day finally came, I knew that it was finally time for me to take that big step towards my dream and get this story out there, even if it’s in a small way.
